Charge your smartphone to 48% in just 5 minutes! Huawei leading the charge
January 02, 2016
Fast battery charging developments
Lets’ admit it, once the smartphone era has emerged, we have been delighted with such a great number of options they provide. One thing we do miss all this time is a quick charging battery.
All the big players have made relatively small steps forward in that regard, leaving battery life a major bottleneck in smartphone performance.
We are familiar with quite a few tech concepts addressing the issue, although none of them came to become massively produced.
Huawei leading the charge
Keeping that in mind, Chinese giant Huawei has made it to top tech news just recently presenting considerable battery tech advancement. Its two prototype removable lithium-ion batteries that can recharge in minutes! It is 10 times faster than that of normal lithium ion batteries.
Watch the Video demonstration:
- The lower capacity battery charged by 68% in just 2 minutes - but is not big enough to run a smartphone for long. Watch the charging demonstration video: http://v.qq.com/page/y/8/6/y0172nbxo86.html
- The higher capacity one charged by 48% in 5 minutes and could provide up to 10 hours of talk time. Video: http://v.qq.com/page/f/0/u/f0172ovjg0u.html
There aren’t many details yet to answer all our questions regarding the technology specifics. Although Huawei does say that it is using heteroatoms - atoms that aren't carbon or hydrogen. In order to briefly describe the specifics - the batteries have a catalyst built into the anode that speeds up the conversion of electrical energy into chemical energy. The firm claims they can increase charging speeds without affecting the battery's overall lifespan.
Huawei-owned Watt Lab developed the batteries. Their presentation took place at the 56th Battery Symposium in Japan.
You might wonder if there’s anything else out there on the subject.
Storedot, Israel based tech lab, has presented its fast-charging device this year. Their scientists claim that it will be able to charge any smartphone battery in under one minute. We will make sure to follow up on their progress, as so far the offer is still under development.
